Understanding the benefits and risks of using herbal supplements by Melinda Cusack, MD, family physician at MyMichigan Health.
Although they are heavily marketed as “natural” products, it can be difficult to know which herbal supplements are safe. While it’s important to speak with your doctor before using any supplement, there may be both benefits and risks associated with using these products.
Q. Are herbal health products and supplements safe?
A. Herbal products are not necessarily safer than over-the-counter or prescription drugs simply because they are considered or marketed as natural. The ingredients might still not be natural to the human body. In fact, they might have powerful side effects instead. There are some herbal supplements whose risks and benefits are well-studied, but others need to be looked at more closely.
Q. Are “natural” supplements safer than others?
A. Some natural supplements are very safe and very well researched and we even have dosage schedules based on what is safe. An example of a natural supplement like this is melatonin, which is frequently used to help people sleep at night. It might even be safer than some prescription drugs. However, other natural products can interfere with medications such as blood thinners. That’s why it’s so important to talk to your doctor before you start taking any supplement, so they can help you determine what’s safest for you.
Q. Are supplements regulated by the FDA?
A. They are not regulated in the same way as over-the-counter or prescription drugs. Herbal health products are actually considered to be in the same category as dietary supplements, so they are not in the same category as food. As a result, the FDA does not require proof of the safety and effectiveness of an herbal supplement for treating different health conditions.
Q. As a consumer, how can I be sure of the ingredients in herbal products or supplements?
A. Manufacturers must label the product with its name, manufacturer, ingredients and amount of product. Looking at the label, you should be able to trust it.
Q. What is the best and safest way to incorporate these products or supplements into my life?
A. The best approach is to always talk to your doctor so they can think about the medications you are taking to find out if anything may be interfering. Some herbal supplements are well known and doctors are familiar with them, but other products may not be. If your doctor approves the supplement, be sure to read all label instructions carefully before taking it, and take it as written and directed.
Q. What questions should I ask my doctor about the supplements I take?
A. A great question to ask is whether supplements help and are beneficial. Some are definitely more helpful or helpful than others. Supplements can also be very expensive, and your health care provider can help you determine if they are having the desired effect, which will help you determine whether or not they are worth your money.
