Athens – MYTILINEOS contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) to reduce food insecurity of vulnerable social groups by Greece.

In 2021, the Company ensured access for 4,000 children and adolescents from vulnerable social groups to adequate food with high nutritional value.

For a third consecutive year, MYTILINEOS actively participated in the NUTRITION program of the Prolepsis Institute, offering daily and throughout the school year, free healthy meals, while promoting healthy eating habits for 225 students from 7 schools in Attica and Boeotia. The program was immediately adapted to the circumstances and requirements arising from the pandemic, with the aim of continuing the food supply in all schools as smoothly as possible and ensuring the health and safety of children, as well as the community. . In this effort, all students received specially designed food parcels in schools, even when school units had suspended operations to meet their nutritional needs through a full and healthy breakfast.

The Society distributed a total of 18,509 healthy meals by addressing nutrition issues and improving children’s healthy food choices. The results of the quantitative and qualitative analyzes following the completion of the program show that the daily nutrition of the students reduces food insecurity and hunger, promotes the physical and mental health of the children and improves their eating habits. In addition, the average food insecurity index decreased significantly by 23.3% while 73.3% of students stopped suffering from severe hunger at the end of the program.

Besides, MYTILINEOS in 2021, launched its cooperation with the Food Bank institution against hunger, implementing the “Emergency Food Fund – for Children” program, meeting the needs of 25 bread lines and institutions in Attica to support children (a) from large families, (b) children living in institutions and (c) children with disabilities.

During the pandemic, the nutritional needs of vulnerable social groups have increased, making it imperative to participate in the program by offering quantities and types of foods mainly needed for one year. A total of 61,338 glasses of milk and cereals were distributed to 3,784 children, 149 of whom live in 6 institutions and 1,448 disabled children.

The Company’s goal is to expand its cooperation in 2022 and contribute even more to the eradication of hunger and the reduction of food insecurity among children from vulnerable social groups. As of 2018, the Company has ensured the distribution of 77,804 healthy school meals to 768 children from 21 nursery, primary and secondary schools through the “Nutrition” program. In this context, MYTILINEOS will continue to provide 26,000 additional meals to meet the needs of 218 students in 6 selected schools with food insecurity rate >70%, while at the same time strengthening 25 supply chains/institutions providing the most needed food, meeting the needs of a growing number Number of children.
