Best Supplements for Weight Loss: Green Coffee Extract May Promote Fat Burning

Obesity has become a serious health problem, but there is an array of supposed weight management strategies that claim to help. The effectiveness of these supplements, however, is subject to debate. A supplement is said to help improve metabolic function promoting weight loss.

Green Coffee Extract (GCE) is present in green or raw coffee and is also present in roasted coffee, but much of the GCE is destroyed during the roasting process.

Some constituents of GCE, such as chlorogenic acid (CGA) are found in a variety of fruits and vegetables.

GCE extract is marketed as a weight loss supplement, with evidence accumulating from animal studies regarding the use of GCE as a possible weight loss supplement.

A study published in the United States National Library of Medicine looked at green coffee extract as a weight loss solution.

The study noted, “There is also evidence that certain dietary phenols, including GCE, can alter intestinal glucose absorption in several ways.

“This activity could provide a basis for explaining its effects on body weight.

“Evidence from trials suggests that taking GCE can promote weight loss.

“However, several caveats exist. The magnitude of the effect is small and the clinical relevance of this effect is uncertain.

“More rigorous trials with longer duration are needed to assess the effectiveness and safety of GCE as a weight loss supplement.”

Scientists believe that the high levels of chlorogenic acids in green coffee bean extract are the key to its effects on weight loss.

One review reported that chlorogenic acid can help lower blood sugar levels and reduce insulin spikes by reducing the absorption of carbohydrates in the digestive tract.

Chlorogenic acids are also known to boost fat metabolism, lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and improve obesity-related hormone levels.

However, much of the existing research focuses on rats, and more human studies are needed.

It is important to consult your doctor before embarking on any new supplements for weight loss.

Other possible supplements that could promote weight loss include:

  • Iodine
  • Vitamin D
  • Fiber
  • The iron
  • Garcinia cambogia.
