Previous research has noted that ketone supplementation benefits seniors diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia, which informed research conducted at the Okanagan campus of the University of British Columbia. An experimental trial has shown that ketone supplementation may be a new treatment strategy to protect and improve brain health, especially in people classified as obese. Dr Jeremy Walsh beamed, “Once validated with a larger group of people, we expect that these supplements can be used to protect and improve brain health in obese people. “
To illustrate, participants who took ketone supplements during the first fortnight then took placebos for the next two weeks.
The experiment was designed as such so that researchers could compare responses to the supplement versus placebo in the same participants.
Cognitive function was validated via an iPad app and cerebral blood flow was documented on a duplex ultrasound of the arteries in the neck.
Blood samples were also taken to measure hormones known to improve cognitive function.
The results revealed that ketone supplementation improved blood flow to the brain and improved aspects of cognitive function, such as speed of processing.
How else can you reduce the risk of cognitive decline?

Such a diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds.
Plus, it includes olive oil and moderate amounts of fish, poultry, and dairy products.
“This diet has long been recognized as promoting better cardiovascular health,” said the experts.
And, as all health experts know, there is a strong association with good heart and brain health.
Another measure to protect the brain is to avoid excessive alcohol consumption.
In fact, people are encouraged not to drink at all if they are to prevent cognitive decline.
It is also helpful to get consistent, restful sleep, between seven and eight hours a day.
Harvard Health experts added that staying mentally active as you age is also essential.
These mentally engaging activities include reading, writing, crossword puzzles, board and card games, and music.
Plus, social interactions can have a “profound effect” on your health and longevity.
